On the back of a career-high 27 points from sophomore guard Trey Kell, San Diego State beat Fresno State 73-67 in overtime Tuesday night to move to 6-0 in Mountain West play.

Kell’s 27-point effort was the most by an Aztec since Xavier Thames scored 30 points on March 22, 2014,  in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s definitely exciting to do that on a college level in major Division I college basketball,” Kell said. “It’s always fun to do that and it’s a humbling experience. I’m just glad we got the victory.”

A 3-pointer by Fresno State senior guard Cezar Guerrero at the buzzer forced overtime. The Aztecs had led for over 36 minutes in the game prior to that moment.

After losing six games in their nonconference schedule, the Aztecs have been able to finish out several close games in conference play.

“We have the confidence in each other now,” Kell said.  “We’ve been through the battles, we’ve had close games throughout conference but we’ve come out on top. We have the confidence now to stay calm, stayed poised and we’ll come out with the win.”

SDSU is now 6-0 in league play for the second time in three seasons.

While their record remains perfect in conference, Fisher isn’t convinced his team has fully turned the corner from their sluggish start.

“We have to play better. If we want to continue to be unblemished, we have to play better,” Fisher said. “We have to find ways to, when we get a lead, hang onto it, finish and keep them off of us.”

The Aztecs remain at  home for a game against Utah State at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network and can be heard on the The Mighty 1090 AM.
