Following its win against Air Force Saturday to clinch the Mountain West title, and subsequent invitation to the Hawai’i Bowl on Christmas Eve, San Diego State football announced its team awards Tuesday.

The MVP went to junior running back Donnel Pumphrey, who moved to No. 2 on the school’s all-time rushing list this season while leading the team with 16 rushing touchdowns and 19 total touchdowns.

He also won the award last season and is the fifth player in program history to win in back-t0-back seasons and the first since Kirk Morrison (2003-04).

Pumphrey rushed for a team-high 1,554 yards and also grabbed a team-high 25 receptions for 397 yards.

Along with the team MVP, Pumphrey also was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year.

On the defensive side of the ball, junior defensive back Damontae Kazee and junior linebacker Calvin Munson shared the Defensive Player of the Year award.

Kazee was selected as the MW’s Defensive Player of the Year as well, as he totaled seven interceptions, two forced fumbles and 69 tackles on the season.

Munson led the team with 92 tackles, 14.5 tackles for a loss and nine sacks, while also grabbing two interceptions which were both returned for touchdowns.

Sophomore running back Rashaad Penny took home the Special Teams Outstanding Player of the Year for his work on kick-return duty. He averaged 30.6 yards per kick return and returned two of them for touchdowns. He also recorded five sacks on kickoffs en route to being named the conference’s Special Team Player of the Year as well.
