Joseph Cramossa scored the tie-breaking goal with five minutes and four seconds to play and Mike Sgarbossa scored his first two goals of the season in the first period as the San Diego Gulls defeated the San Jose Barracuda, 3-2, Saturday at San Jose.
Cramossa scored his first goal of the season off assists by Chris Mueller and Antoine Lageniere helping the Gulls improve to 8-2-0-0.
San Jose, the San Jose Sharks American Hockey League affiliate, tied the score on Nikita Jevpalovs’ goal at 12:19 of the third period before a crowd announced at 4,053 at the SAP Center.
Sgarbossa opened the scoring 8:15 into the first period off assists by Brandon Montour and Harry Zolnierczyk, who was reassigned to the Gulls earlier today by their NHL parent, the Anaheim Ducks.
Zolnierczyk became the sixth player the Ducks recalled from the Gulls this season on Friday, but he did not play in that night’s game against Columbus.
Sgarbossa scored his second goal at 19:27 off assists by Nick Ritchie and Joe Piskula. The 19-year-old Ritchie, the Gulls youngest player, leads the team with 10 points on eight goals and two assists.
The Barracuda (3-4-0-1) scored the lone goal of the second period 18:37 into the period when Barclay Goodrow scored his first goal of the season off assists by Scott Timmins and Dylan DeMelo , eight seconds after the Gulls killed off a four-minute power play.
Gulls goaltender John Gibson stopped 31 of 33 shots to improve to 6-1. Troy Grosenick made 25 saves for San Jose.
The Gulls killed off all three Barracuda power-play opportunities. The Gulls failed to score on both their power-play opportunities.
The Gulls next game is scheduled for Wednesday at Valley View Casino Center against the Bakersfield Condors, the Edmonton Oilers’ AHL affiliate.
