Under new head coach Lamont Smith, USD is ready for its first game action of the 2015-16 season as they take on Caltech in an exhibition at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday.
The Toreros season officially opens when they travel to USC on Nov. 13 for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
This will be Smith’s first stint as an NCAA head coach, after serving as the associate head coach for University of New Mexico before accepting the job at USD
Smith played at USD from 1994-99 when he was the team’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and was a team captain from 1997-99.
Just like Smith’s head coaching career, the Toreros lack experience on their team with only two seniors returning along with the departure of the school’s all-time scoring leader Johnny Dee.
The school’s all-time block leader, Jito Kok, is one of the senior returning along with Dude Sanadze, who started 14 games last season.
Along with USC, the Toreros have another big non-conference game against cross-town rival SDSU, which is scheduled to be played at 2 p.m. on Dec. 5 at Petco Park.
The date of the game may change if SDSU’s football team earns a birth to the Mountain West championship game.
Tickets for Saturday’s game are $5 and it can be heard on ESPN 1700 AM.
