News of San Diego Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen‘s kidney injury went from bad to worse Tuesday when the team announced he would miss the rest of the season with a lacerated kidney.

Allen underwent a non-surgical procedure Tuesday and is expected to recover in approximately six weeks, but with the team’s playoff hopes dwindling away, they decided to play it safe, according to ESPN.

The injury occurred as he hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass over two defenders and landed awkwardly in the end zone in last week’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

He had been having a career season, hauling in an AFC best 67 receptions through Week 8 for 725 yards and four touchdowns. Only two other players in NFL history have had more catches through eight weeks in a season.

Running back Branden Oliver and linebacker Tourek Williams will join Allen on the season-ending injured reserve, the team also announced.

Oliver suffered a toe injury last week loss and Williams’ foot injury stems back from the preseason opener on Aug. 13.

Wide receiver Javontee Herndon and defensive back Greg Ducre were promoted from the practice squad, and offensive lineman J.D. Walton was re-signed, to take the place of the injured players.
