University of San Diego redshirt-freshman quarterback Anthony Lawrence leads the Toreros into a road non-conference battle Saturday night against Warner University (Lake Wales, Florida) after having a career day last week against Drake.
Lawrence won the Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week and STATS Football Championship Series National Freshman of the Week for his performance in the team’s 28-0 win over Drake.
He went 22-for-33 for 326 yards and two touchdowns, registering his first 300-yard passing game as a Torero. He now has 12 passing touchdown on the season.
Warner opened the season 2-0, but have lost their last five games heading into this weekend’s contest. Junior linebacker Loronza Smith leads the team and The Sun Conference with 59 tackles, and also has two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a sack on his docket.
With the win at home against Drake last week, the Toreros have won 21 straight home games against PFL teams, the longest active streak in the conference.
Junior corner Jamal Agnew currently leads all PFL players with 1.67 passed defended per game. Last season he led all FCS players with 2.1 passes defended per game while netting four interceptions.
USD (4-2, 3-1 PFL) is currently No. 2 in the conference behind Dayton (6-0, 3-0 PFL). The Toreros lost to Dayton 13-12 back on Oct. 10 in Dayton.
