Although the San Diego Padres have two potential managerial candidates on their current staff in bench coach Dave Roberts and hitting coach Mark Kotsay, it looks like the team will look elsewhere for their new manager.

Roberts was interviewed twice by the Seattle Mariners for their managerial opening, before they decided to go elsewhere, but has yet to be interviewed by the Padres.

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, it seems “likely” that the team will fill the void with an external candidate.

Former Padres slugger Phil Nevin is a popular choice for teams — including the Padres — looking for a new manager, and has interviewed with the Padres and three other teams so far.

Other candidates the team has interviewed so far are former infielder Alex Cora, current Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Andy Green and former long-time Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.

Roberts was a finalist for the Mariners’ opening and the Los Angeles Dodgers have also expressed  interest in him.
