The UCSD surf team has a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii as they participate in the semifinals of the Red Bull Bracket Reel competition.

UCSD advanced past the first round of the competition after defeating Loyola Marymount University, and now take on University of North Carolina’s surf team in the second round.

Scoring is based off videos that each team provides.

The first round scoring, judged by professional free surfer Ian Walsh, was labeled as “Best Days and Glory Waves.” Teams were judged based off videos that showed the best swells of the season.

The second round is called, “Kooks & Flukes,” and will be scored based off the best Hail Mary surf moments and humor, by professional free surfer Jamie O’Brien. This round runs from Oct. 19-22.

If UCSD is able to advance to the final round they will enter the “Style Flies” round, where its video will be judged based off of “the best use of plot, film style, editing, angles and sound,” by award-winning surf film maker, Aaron Lieber.

While the videos have independent judges, fans decide which team moves on to the next round by liking the video on the competition’s website. The video with the most likes moves to the next round.

The winner of the competition receives the “Red Bull North Shore” experience, an all expenses-paid trip to Hawaii, which includes a surf session with Walsh and O’Brien.
