Smith transferred to SDSU from Kentucky in the spring and was listed atop the team’s depth chart at the beginning of fall camp.
However, redshirt sophomore Christian Chapman, from Carlsbad High, made a strong attempt to take the job from Smith.
Earlier in August, Long said it’s conceivable that both players could see time at quarterback.
He would not indicate in what capacity Chapman might play in the opener and said it will depend on how the game goes.
Holmes missing once again
Long also announced Monday that freshman wide receiver Desean Holmes is again missing and will not be returning to the team.
Holmes would not return calls from the coaching staff in the summer, but they were able to finally contact him during fall camp and he began classes last week.
However, Long said that the freshman’s dorm room was empty following one week of school and that the team would no longer be pursuing him, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
