The Seattle-based consumer co-op is inviting its 5.5 million members to vote online on how to share the money among ten nonprofit trail partners. Each vote — one per day per person –will invest $5 in a selected trail.
The Coast to Creat Trail is supported by the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy, which is working to complete a 12-mile segment through the Pamo Valley. The entire 70-mile trail runs from the Pacific Ocean in Del Mar to the mountains of Julian.
“At REI, we believe that trails are nature’s playground. They connect us to one another and to something larger than ourselves,” said Jerry Stritzke, REI president and CEO. “These natural treasures are often underfunded, so we are asking the outdoor community to join us in celebrating our dedicated nonprofit partners and help us build, improve and enhance these ten great trails for generations to come.”
The other 10 trails competing are the Backbone Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains, the Coon Creek to Bear River Trail Systems near Auburn, and trails in Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Texas and Washington.
