San Diego State junior running back Donnel Pumphrey was added to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award Thursday, given to the nation’s top running back.
Pumphrey was on the preseason watch list last season, before he went on to set a school record for yards in a season (1,867) and recorded 20 touchdowns while averaging 6.8 yards-per-carry.
He also set a school record for 10 100-yard performances, as he went on to become a first-team all-Mountain West selection.
Pumphrey was also placed on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award (collegiate player of the year).
The placement on the watch lists is just a couple of more than a dozen accolades that he has received this offseason.
Athlon sports ranked him as the No. 1 running back in the Mountain West, Lindy’s Sports ranked him as the No. 9 running back in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Sporting News ranked him as the Mountain West’s biggest overachiever.
