Darija Jurak and Raven Klaasen won a super tiebreaker to give the San Diego Aviators a 22-21 victory over the Philadelphia Freedoms in a World Team Tennis match at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Jurak and Klaasen defeated Marcelo Melo and CoCo Vandeweghe, 7-5, after forcing the tiebreaker with a 5-4 victory over Melo and Vandeweghe to tie the match, 21-21.
The match marked the debut of Taylor Fritz with the Aviators (2-0). He teamed with Klaasen for a 5-2 victory over Melo and Robby Ginepri, in the night’s opening set, men’s doubles, the lost to Ginepri, 5-4, in men’s singles, the third set.
The 17-year-old Rancho Santa Fe resident missed the Aviators 24-19 season-opening victory over the California Dream Sunday because he was traveling back to San Diego after playing a semifinal boys’ doubles match at Wimbledon Saturday.
Fritz is first in the boys’ singles rankings compiled by the International Tennis Federation, the sport’s worldwide governing body.
Vandeweghe, a Rancho Santa Fe resident who reached Wimbledon’s women’s singles quarterfinals this month, won both of her first two sets for Philadelphia (1-1).
Vandeweghe defeated Chani Scheepers, 5-4, in women’s singles, the match’s second set, and teamed with Taylor Townsend for a 5-3 victory over Jurak and Scheepers in women’s doubles to give the Freedoms a 17-16 lead entering mixed doubles.
