The San Diego Padres were defeated by the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Monday as Pedro Alvarez hit a walk-off single with two outs in the ninth.

Alvarez is married to Padres interim manager Pat Murphy‘s daughter Kelli, the two have been married since 2011.

As for the game, the Padres struck first in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Alexi Amarista, after a rain delay forced the game to start at 4:30 p.m. rather than 4:05 p.m.

Pittsburgh then answered with an unearned run in the seventh when, coincidentally, third baseman Yangervis Solarte was charged with a throwing error on a hot shot from Alvarez, which scored Andrew McCutchen from second.

Padres starter James Shields put together one of his best outings as a Friar, throwing seven hits with no earned runs allowed on two hits.

It was the first time this season Shields threw seven innings without allowing an earned run, a feat he accomplished five times last year.

It was then Alvarez again, who drove in McCutchen with a single just right of the second base bag to end the game off Padre reliever Brandon Maurer (5-2), who took the loss.

Jared Hughes (2-1) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless top half of the ninth.

The Padres outhit the Pirates 7-5 and had less runners left on base, seven to the Pirates’ nine, but Pittsburgh still came away with the victory.

The two clubs square up again tomorrow, when Tyson Ross (3-5, 3.63 ERA) meets Francisco Liriano (5-6, 2.99 ERA) at 4:05 p.m.
