Max Hoetzel, a 6-foot-8 freshman transfer from Indiana, orally committed to SDSU on Tuesday after his two-day campus visit.
Hoetzel will have three years of eligibility with the Aztecs, and provides the team with a 3-point shooter it searched for last season, although he must sit out one season per NCAA transfer regulations.
“I want to find a school where I can have a bigger impact on the court,” said Hoetzel in a release from Indiana back in March, after announcing he would transfer.
Last season with the Hoosiers he averaged 2.4 points and 7.7 minutes in 31 games.
Indiana coach Tom Crean spoke highly of the freshman after he announced he would be leaving the program.
“We were always impressed with Max’s upside and potential but unfortunately in his view it did not turn into the extended minutes he wanted,” Crean said.
Hoetzel spent his freshman-junior prep seasons at Calabasas High, then spent his senior year at a prep school in Massachusetts.
While in high school, SDSU recruited Hoetzel before he chose Indiana.
With the commitment of Hoetzel, the Aztecs have one scholarship remaining for next season.
They are in the running for Louisville freshman transfer Shaqquan Aaron, along with prep stars Brendan Bailey and Michael Cage Jr., both juniors in high school at the moment.
