With the 2015 NFL Draft just hours away, ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter reported on Thursday that San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will not be traded today, according to Schefter’s sources.
“He’s not going anywhere. He’s staying in San Diego,” Schefter said during a morning appearance on ESPN Radio.”
Much speculation has surfaced about a possible trade of Rivers to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 overall pick, so that the Bolts could select 2014 Heisman winner Marcus Mariota.
This speculation occurred because of Rivers’ reserves against the possibility of playing in Los Angeles, and the fact his contract expires at the end of next season.
However, with draft day fastly approaching, it seems that the consensus is leaning towards Rivers not being traded.
U-T San Diego, and now ESPN, have both reported in the last week that the Chargers and Titans have not discussed a trade for Rivers, and that it’s very unlikely it will happen.
Bolts general manager Tom Telesco reiterated that sentiment last week during the team’s pre-draft press conference.
“As I’ve said for the last four months, Philip is our quarterback,” Telesco said. ” It’s our plan and intent that he’s our quarterback well into the future.”
The Chargers have the No. 17 selection in this years draft, some positions the team may address in the first round are running back, defensive line and offensive line.
Some names to watch are running backs Todd Gurley (Georgia) and Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin), offensive lineman D.J. Humphries (Florida) and defensive linemen Danny Shelton (Washington) and Malcolm Brown (Texas).
