The San Diego Padres scored a season-high 14 runs on 17 hits against the Colorado Rockies Monday night at Coors Field in a 14-3 victory to kick of a four-game set.

The Friars wasted no time jumping on Rockies left hander Jorge De La Rosa, scoring five runs in the first inning.

They would then tack on four more in the second inning, and five in the fifth inning.

“The thing that stood out for me was that the ball was elevated more than what we’ve seen from (De La Rosa) over the years,” said manager Bud Black via Padres.com. “Some balls were up out over the plate, which is non-De La Rosa-like. And our guys took advantage of it, plain and simple.”

Monday marked the second time this season the Friars scored double digit runs. The other time was a 10-2 victory over left hander Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants.

Right fielder Matt Kemp was the ringleader in the offensive attack, as he he went 3-4 with a double and four RBIs.

First baseman Yonder Alonso (.364) continued his hot season with three hits and three RBIs.

Every single Padre who recorded an at-bat recorded a hit besides catcher Wil Nieves who pinch-hit in the ninth inning.

That includes right hander Odrisamer Despaigne who recorded his first career hit after starting out 0-30.

Despaigne (2-0, 1.47 ERA) recorded the win 6 2/3 innings pitched, five strikeouts and allowed two runs.

De La Rosa (0-1, 31.50) picked up the loss in his first start of the season after coming of the disabled list.

The two teams will square off again Tuesday at Coors Field where right hander Brandon Morrow (1-0, 1.29 ERA) will face off against left hander Tyler Matzek (1-0, 1.80 ERA).
