Mathews, who was a first round selection by the team in 2010, has yet to start all 16 games in a season in his five-year career.
The most games the oft-injured running back has played in a season is 14 (2011, 2013), and those were the only two seasons in his career that he eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing.
Last season Mathews started a career-low seven games and rushed for a career low 330 yards as he was hampered by a sprained MCL and an ankle injury throughout the season.
With running backs like C.J. Spiller, Demarco Murray, Justin Forsett and Mark Ingram set to hit free agency the Chargers have multiple options to fill the running back slot.
The team also has running backs Branden Oliver—582 rushing yards and four touchdowns in his rookie season—and Danny Woodhead still under contract for next year.
