San Diego State will hit the road on Tuesday to play New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., formerly known as The Pit, but now called WisePies Arena, a place where the Aztecs suffered a 14-point loss last season.

However, the Aztecs are on a roll right now with a two-game winning streak (Wyoming, Colorado St.)  and hold a one-game lead for first place in the Mountain West Conference.

With the two-game winning streak the Aztecs also shot up to No. 27 in the Associated Press Top-25 poll and are No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches poll.

No player on the Aztecs is hotter at the moment than junior guard Winston Shepard.

He scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the team’s win over Colorado St. last Saturday and scored 18 points in the team’s win over Wyoming last Wednesday.

Shepard’s performance over the week was good enough to garner him Mountain West Player of the Week honors, the second time he has received the award this season.

The Aztecs had their way with the Lobos at home this season, beating them by 14 points.

However, they have not won at New Mexico since the 2011-12 season.

These teams have matched up 80 times over the programs’ history and New Mexico holds the advantage at 44-35.

SDSU coach Steve Fisher has the most wins, though, against New Mexico in the NCAA out of active coaches with 18.
