San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has decided to forego surgery on a bulging disc in his back this offseason, an injury that hampered him in the back-end of the 2014 season.

“At this point, the back injury is not requiring surgery,” Rivers said to KGB-FM radio. “We’ll kind of revisit it in a month or so. But everything is improving. I’m back to my regular workouts and running around.”

The injury to Rivers’ back was so serious that it almost cost him the last month of the season, according to NFL Network, but rest this offseason seems to have  paid dividends for him thus far.

“Me and my wife played a little tennis the other day. I’ve hit the golf ball a few times, so I’m actually on the up and up. So I’m pretty excited.”

Rivers, 33, is in the last season of his contract and is on track to make $15.57 million in 2015 in base salary.

Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco has expressed interest in having Rivers with the Chargers for long-term, though.

“We are committed to making sure Philip retires as a Charger,” said Telesco during a season-ending press-conference last December.
