Golf legend Billy Casper, who grew up in Chula Vista and went on to win two U.S. Opens and a Masters, died Saturday in Springville, Utah.

His death, first reported by the U-T San Diego, came after a battle with pneumonia.

Casper caddied during his youth at San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, and spent one semester at the University of Notre Dame on a golf scholarship. He became a professional golfer in 1954 and went on to win 51 PGA Tour events and played on eight U.S. Ryder Cup teams.

After his professional career, Casper became a designer of golf courses, and his management company, Billy Casper Golf, is now the second-largest operator of golf courses in the United States.
