San Diego State football coach Rocky Long announced his class of 2015 on Wednesday, which included 23 athletes who signed their Nation Letters Of Intent.
Of those 23 signees the only player recruited from a San Diego high school was wide receiver Jack Bailey (Torrey Pines).
“In our opinion, there weren’t as many senior football players (in San Diego) that we thought were Division I caliber,” said Long during a press conference on Wednesday. “There was about a third of what normally comes out of San Diego. Now, that is not the case next year. There’s a lot more guys in next year’s senior class that meets that standard in our opinion.”
California is where the majority of Long’s recruits came from (16), but he also signed six players out of Texas.
“When there’s not as many here, you have to go someplace else to recruit,” Long said.
What has Long excited is the quality of athletes he was able to bring in, citing that most of his signees were dual and triple-sport athletes in high school.
One player in particular that had Long’s excitement was linebacker Kyahva Tezino (Los Angeles/Salesian High).
Tezino was a four-star recruit, and the Aztecs were able to pluck him away from Washington St.
“He’s one of those athletes. He can play safety, he played mostly linebacker at the high school level. But he played some on offense too,” Long said. “We told him he’s a linebacker, but that doesn’t mean that’s where he’ll play.”
