San Diego State will honor the life of its former baseball coach, and San Diego Padres legend, Tony Gwynn, during a week-long celebration from Feb. 9-15 that will include Gwynn’s number being retired for the second time by the university.

Gwynn already has his No. 28 retired, which he wore during his playing career, and will now have his No. 19 retired,  which he wore as a coach, on Feb. 13, prior to the team’s season opener against Valparaiso.

“Voice of the Aztecs” Ted Leitner will  emcee  the event, and former Aztec, and current Washington Nationals pitcher, Stephen Strasburg, will be in attendance.

The number retiring is just one of many events that will be going on throughout the week to help honor the San Diego icon, and the team he coached.

On Monday Feb. 9 the university will hold its monthly Aztecs Coaches luncheon, that will feature the team’s new Head Coach Mark Martinez.

On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the baseball team will receive their rings for winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament last season during halftime of the men’s basketball game against Wyoming.

Friday will be the team’s opening day, which will include the number retirement, and on Saturday Feb. 14, several players on the team will shave their heads, as the team will hold an Aztecs vs. Cancer event in Gwynn’s honor.

Festivities will conclude on Feb. 15, as the team will host the West Covina Little League, an organization that meant a lot to Gwynn, and will hold a little league clinic after the team’s game at noon.

Along with the festivities, SDSU, and other team’s in the Mountain West, will wear “TG” patches on their uniforms to honor Gwynn.
