Oceanside football will try for its first CIF Division I State Championship under longtime head coach John Carroll when the Pirates take on Folsom at 8 p.m. Friday at the StubHub Center in Carson.
The Pirates (14-0, No 5 team in Calif.) secured their berth to the championship game by defeating Fresno Edison 27-22 last Friday night at Oceanside’s newly named football field, Simcox Field at John Carroll Stadium.
Under Carroll’s 26-year tenure with Oceanside, the Pirates have won 13 San Diego Section championships, two Division II state titles and have compiled a record of 260-73-6.
This will be the first time, though, that Carroll will attempt to lead his team to a Division I state title.
In order to beat Folsom (14-0, No. 3 team in Calif.) and capture the title, Oceanside will need to find an answer to stopping Folsom quarterback Jake Browning. who holds the national career high school touchdown record with 223.
