University of San Diego’s football team will head to Montana this Saturday to take on the University of Montana in the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship, the team’s first ever trip to the tournament.

USD earned the bid by winning the Pioneer League for the third time in four years, after they beat Valpariso on a miraculous 44-yard hail mary touchdown in last seconds of the game, on Nov. 15.

Sophomore running back Jonah Hodges, who is in his first year with the Toreros after transferring from Cal, has been the ringleader of  the USD offense, and ranks No. 2 in the Football Championship Series (FCS) in all-purpose yardage per-game (159.7).

The Toreros and Montana have not matched up since the 1958 season, when USD defeated the Grizzlies 24-13. Montana earned an at-large bid to the tournament out of  the Big Sky Conference, and they are ranked No. 11 in the FCS Coaches Poll.

If USD defeats Montana, they will go on to play Eastern Washington on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PST, and the game can be viewed either through a webcast via usdtoreros.com, or through ESPN 3.
