Several members of the San Diego Padres shared their condolences for the family and friends of 22-year-old St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras who was killed, along with his girlfriend, in a car crash in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
The news of Taveras’ death shocked the baseball community, and many players including Padres second baseman Jedd Gyorko and first baseman Yonder Alonso took to Twitter to share their thoughts and prayers for Taveras’ family:
Prayers go out to Oscar Taveras’ family. Such sad news. #RIPOscar

Catcher Rene Rivera also expressed his compassion for Taveras and his family through Twitter in Spanish, which translates to “May Oscar Taveras Rest In Peace. My condolences to both families.”

It was just a few weeks ago that Taveras blasted the signature home run of his young career, a pinch-hit game-tying home run in the NLCS against the Giants, which would end up being the second-to-last hit of his career.
Taveras, who had been lauded by many as the next Albert Pujols of the Cardinals organization, lost control of his vehicle in Puerto Plata near the Atlantic Coast of the Dominican Republic on his way to his hometown of Sosua.
