San Diego Chargers running back Branden Oliver took home Pepsi Rookie of the Week honors for his performance in the Chargers 31-0 win against the New York Jets last Sunday.
Oliver had 114 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, while also catching four passes for 68 yards and a receiving touchdown. He out-gained the entire Jets offense by 32 yards.
When Donald Brown suffered a concussion, Oliver became the next running back in line, and had a breakout performance.
“First and foremost, I know it wouldn’t be possible without God, my teammates supporting me and this coaching staff,” Oliver told Ricky Henne of Chargers.com.“I’m just going out there with confidence and faith in my ability. This feels good to win but I need to keep playing well.”
After not being drafted in the 2014 NFL draft, Oliver signed with the Bolts and made the team out of training camp. Brown’s concussion is going to keep him out of this Sunday’s game against Oakland, along with Ryan Matthews and Danny Woodehad who were already injured, so Oliver will get his first NFL start.
