One of the more unusual college football rivalries takes place Friday when San Diego State University faces top-ranked Fresno State for the oil can trophy.

The trophy comes from a 1930s-era oil can hailing from Fresno that was found at a construction site at San Diego State.

In those days, a drive to either school went on old Route 99 over the Tejon Pass and buses would take cans of extra gas, oil and water.

In the preseason conference media poll, the Bulldogs were selected to win the league, while the Aztecs were picked for second place.

But San Diego State is going into Friday’s game following a 34-17 victory over UNLV last Saturday at Qualcomm Stadium.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno.
