The San Diego Padres made their second trade of a popular player in less than a week Tuesday, sending infielder Chase Headley to the New York Yankees for two players, reports MLB.com.

The Padres will receive infielder Yangervis Solarte, 27, and a prospect, right-hander Rafael De Paula, 23, from the Yankees. The report also said the team covered part of Headley’s salary by sending New York $1 million.

Headley, 30, has played eight seasons with the Padres, while batting .266 with 87 home runs and 401 RBIs. He was versatile in the field too. Though he mostly played third base, he also logged a significant amount of time in left field.

He had his best season two years ago, hitting .286 with 31 homers and 115 RBIs. He also won the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove awards in 2012.

MLB reported that Headley had no regrets about his time in San Diego – “All positive memories,” he said – but also looked forward to joining the Yankees, which are in the race in the American League East.

The Padres are in third place in the National League West, 12 games below .500 and 11.5 games out of first place.

With their prospects for the season so poor, the Padres have been active in the days before baseball’s July 31 trading deadline. In addition to the Headley deal, on Friday the team sent closer Huston Street to the Los Angeles Angels for four players.
