New Mexico beat San Diego State 64-58 Saturday, winning the Mountain West Conference title and a place in the NCAA tournament.

It was New Mexico Lobos’ third consecutive conference championship in men’s college basketball.

No. 8 San Diego’s upset at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas came in the  dramatic closing minutes of the game.  With little more than a minute left, No. 20 New Mexico was trailing by one point.

“This was a tremendously hard fought game between two very good basketball teams,” said San Diego State coach Steve Fisher. “We’re disappointed that we didn’t get the opportunity to cut the nets down. But we’re proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve done it.”
