Historical Women Behaving Badly is a double author talk at the San Carlos Branch Library.
Join us on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. for a special presentation by authors Debbie Wastling and Janell Strube dressed in period costume.
Wastling’s book, “Irish Secrets and Lies,” tells of suffragists in Britain; and Strube’s book, “Adelaide: Painter of the Revolution,” recounts the story of an artist during the French Revolution. Two authors, two centuries.
On Oct. 16 at 2 p.m., author Sandra Bonura will discuss her book “The Zoo Lady: How Belle Benchley Built the San Diego Zoo.” Belle Benchley navigated the San Diego Zoo through the brink of bankruptcy to become the world’s first female zoo director, and her legacy changed the world.
Come hear the story of how she spent her days in the trenches pioneering open-air habitats and developing new ideas on animal care that built the zoo into the global icon it is today.
We will be holding a special program called Paws to Read on Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m. for children ages 5 and up to read to a real dog. Studies show that children can improve their confidence and reading skills by reading aloud to animals. Dogs make the perfect nonjudgmental audience. All dogs are provided by the San Diego Humane Society.
The In-N-Out Burger Reading Program will run through Nov. 14. Children ages 4 to 12 can read five books or for 300 minutes and earn a free hamburger or cheeseburger. Pick up a reading log at the library or register online through the Beanstack app. Earn up to three rewards. For more details, visit mysdpl.org/innout. Thank you to our sponsors at In-N-Out Burger.
Come join us for our Lego Builder Club program on the second and fourth Saturday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. We will be meeting on Oct. 10 and 24 to learn, play, and create with LEGO bricks. Explore new ideas and share concepts with other attendees. Each creation will be displayed in the library for two weeks. LEGO bricks contain small objects, so this program is for children ages 6 and over. Parental supervision is suggested.
Our Youth Chess program is for children ages 18 and under and meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. Whether you’re new to chess or already know the game, join us to learn rules and strategies, practice your skills, and enjoy friendly matches. Chess helps build focus, problem-solving skills, and confidence – and it’s a ton of fun to play. Our teen volunteers have worked with children of all ages. Sessions will be held on Oct. 13 and 27.
The Junior Innovators STEM Club is a program for elementary and middle school students that is held on the third Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. Children will work hands-on on a variety of science and math activities. Join us on Oct. 20 for fun and engaging STEM presentations and projects hosted by the Patrick Henry High School Junior Innovators Club.
