City of San Marcos voters have passed Measure Q, a one-cent sales tax that will provide local funding for general government use including public safety and infrastructure improvements.

Nearly 60% of the 38,100 ballots currently counted in the city favored the measure. The city will start to receive funding from Measure Q in April 2025.

The measure is expected to bring in an estimated $20 million of additional revenue per year to fund efforts such as maintaining fire and paramedic services and efficient response times for 9-1-1 calls, local parks, playgrounds and community facilities, city streets, bike lanes and signals and local waterways.

The city will allocate funds to prioritize deferred maintenance of essential facilities and delayed improvements like a new fire station. Spending will be subject to an independent citizens’ oversight committee with annual audits.

“Our commitment to delivering ongoing quality services and programs to our community is what makes our city exceptional,” shared Mayor Rebecca Jones. “We are determined to meet community needs through the prioritization of safety and protection for everyone in San Marcos.”

Over the next 10 years, the city says it is committed to keeping the community informed about Measure Q spending through regular updates and community outreach. For more information, email communications@san-marcos.net.
