2024 elections
Terra Lawson-Remer and Kevin Faulconer.

Terra Lawson-Remer held a notable advantage over a challenger with big name recognition, Kevin Faulconer, Tuesday in her race to keep her seat on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

Her lead dipped slightly as the night wore on, but Faulconer appeared to have little chance to gain enough traction to overtake her.

Meanwhile, two other incumbents, board chair Nora Vargas and Joel Anderson, continued to hold the significant leads they established in early returns.

Faulconer , the former mayor of San Diego, once had grand ambitions, but the moderate Republican’s bid for governor stalled as the party tacked right. He’s attempting a political comeback by taking on Democrat Lawson-Remer, an attorney and grassroots organizer, the incumbent in coastal District 3.

Lawson-Remer has made border pollution a priority, saying the problem impacts waters throughout the county, along with homelessness. Faulconer, though, contends she has failed on aiding those without shelter and that he would work to provide housing, expand support services and search for new ways to provide assistance.

Vargas, a South Bay supervisor, enjoys broad Democratic support along with backing from business owners. However, during the latter part of her campaign for District 1 against Alejandro Galicia, a Navy veteran and plumbing contractor, she has met with criticism for her handling of the cross-border sewage crisis.

District 2, held by Anderson, a moderate Republican, covers most of East County. The veteran pol faces newcomer Gina Jacobs, a Democrat.
