On Saturday the city of San Diego hosted the fifth and final meeting in a series of community workshops to share information about the Ocean Beach Pier Renewal project.
Officials also sought to gather input from San Diegans at the event, at Liberty Station Conference Center.
City staff and engineering consultants will share updates to amenities and features of the preferred pier design concept for a potential replacement for the 58-year-old pier. The concept was released in April and updates are based on the latest public input.
The preferred design is the result of an extensive community engagement process and features elements from three preliminary concepts that were unveiled in September 2023.
This will be the final community workshop for this stage of the project, and the team will share the next steps as part of the long-term plan.
The city will continue to work on acquiring the proper environmental permits and funding for the project. The current estimated cost range for the pier renewal project is $170 million to $190 million.
After it was damaged by high surf in October 2023, the Ocean Beach Pier has remained closed.
Additional and more significant damage occurred in December 2023 when a support bracket – or “pile” – broke off and fell into the ocean. Engineering teams have determined that any work to rehabilitate the pier is not feasible, especially given the likelihood of additional damage occurring during future winter storms.
Here's a look at the refined preferred design concept for a potential #OceanBeach Pier replacement! These renderings are the culmination of more than 18 months of community engagement. https://t.co/2CdbSiZIUk
