California Democratic lawmakers praised Vice President Kamala Harris‘ choice of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday to be her vice presidential running mate.

Walz, a 60-year-old U.S. Army National Guard veteran and former teacher,  was elected to a Republican-leaning district in the House of Representatives in 2006 and served 12 years before being elected governor of Minnesota in 2018.

“Tim Walz is about doing the right thing,” said Gov. Gavin Newsom on X. “Whether it’s free school meals or standing up against gun violence — he’s never been intimidated. He’s about honor and decency, and is exactly the right pick in a campaign about daylight vs darkness.”

Rep. Adam Schiff of Burbank, a candidate for Senate, called Walz “tough, smart, principled, and effective.”

“Governor Walz will be a perfect complement to the Harris ticket, and hugely effective on the campaign trail in key states,” said Schiff. “With his plain-spoken demeanor, he knows how to advocate common sense policies that improve the lives of all Americans.

Rep. Mike Levin, who represents north coastal San Diego and south Orange counties, said he was “excited to see Tim_Walz selected to be our next Vice President.”

“In the fight for the future of our country, Tim has what it takes to defeat the MAGA extremist Trump-Vance ticket and drive our nation forward,” said Levin.

Another San Diego House member, Rep. Scott Peters, called Walz a “brilliant choice” by Harris.

“Tim is a friend and one of the finest leaders I’ve come across in my time in Congress,” said Peters, who represents coastal San Diego County. “As the highest-ever ranking enlisted servicemember in Congress, his deep care and sense of duty to our troops and veterans shown every day.”

But former President Donald Trump dismissed Walz as potentially “the worst VP in history” in an all-capitals social media post.

“He’ll unleash HELL ON EARTH and open our borders to the worst criminals imaginable. He’ll rubber stamp Kamala’s GREEN NEW SCAM and light TRILLIONS of dollars on fire,” said Trump.
