A long-awaited repaving of Balboa Avenue from westbound Kearny Villa Road to Genesee Avenue is expected to begin Monday, July 29.

These streets are the latest focus in Mayor Todd Gloria’s “Sexy Streets” initiative. Since 2021, the city of San Diego has invested nearly $40 million in repairing more than 50 roads in communities with most need of repaving, as determined by the 2019 San Diego’s Climate Equity Index report.

Last month, asphalt overlay crews completed work on a 1.2-mile segment of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard from Shawline Street to Kearny Mesa Road. The repairs helped address the high concentration of large potholes throughout that corridor.

Repaving on Balboa Avenue is expected to take four weeks, city officials say. In 2023, sections of this busy roadway received scores ranging from “poor” to “failed” in a city assessment.

Roads in San Diego are selected for repair based on several factors, including traffic volume, mobility and transit connections, maintenance history, other construction projects and available funding.
