San Diego mayoral candidate Larry Turner said Wednesday a recent poll shows growing support for his challenge to incumbent Todd Gloria, with a large number of voters undecided.

The early May poll by local Competitive Edge Research showed Gloria at 40.4% to Turner’s 31.6% with 27.9% undecided.

In the March 5 primary, Gloria captured 49.99% of the vote to Turner’s 23.07%, with three other candidates splitting the rest.

Turner, a Marine Corps veteran and San Diego Police community relations officer who is running his first campaign for elected office, said the poll shows “an enthusiastic base” for his candidacy.

“Many of the undecided voters know Gloria but are just starting to learn about me and are eager to hear more,” Turner said.

Turner has vowed to “challenge the status quo and offer voters a compelling alternative in the upcoming November election.

Gloria, who has served in both the state Assembly and San Diego City Council, has been widely endorsed by state and local elected officials, including a majority of the council.

The poll was conducted May 6 to 15 among 413 San Diego voters.
