As the March 5 primary nears, an official report on party registration in California shows that registered Democrats exceed registered Republicans by almost a 2-to-1 margin.
Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber released the final statewide registration report on Friday with data as of Feb. 20 — just 15 days before the primary.
Her report showed 10.3 million registered Democrats, or 46.6% of voters, versus 5.39 million Republicans, or 24.4% of voters, with 4.82 million voters, or 21.8%, indicating no party preference.
A remaining 1.18 million voters, or 5.7%, were registered for minor parties, including American Independent, Green and Libertarian.
The Democratic share has grown by 1.3 percentage points since 2020, while the Republican portion increased by 0.5 points. Those increases came primarily from a 3.2-point decline in no party preference registrations.
California citizens who missed the voter registration deadline can provisionally register on March 5. Their ballots will be counted once their county elections office has completed the voter registration verification process.
