San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher announced his endorsement on Wednesday of City Councilmember Georgette Gómez in the race for California’s 53rd congressional district.

“As a Marine Corps combat veteran and Democratic County Supervisor, I know San Diego’s vets and working families will have no greater advocate in Congress than Georgette Gómez,” said Fletcher. “From community organizer to Council President, Georgette Gómez has spent her life fighting for cleaner air, reducing veterans’ homelessness, expanding affordable housing and ensuring no San Diego community gets left behind.”

Fletcher succeeded Gómez as chair of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, and has worked with her at the county level to expand public transit and affordable housing.

Gómez, who faces Sara Jacobs and a number of other Democrats in the March primary, has also been endorsed by Rep. Juan Vargas, state Sen. Toni Atkins, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez and City Councilmember Barbara Bry, among others.

If elected in November, Gómez would be the first LGBTQ Latina member of Congress.

The 53rd District, which encompasses much of central San Diego County, is currently represented by Susan Davis, who is retiring at the end of her 10th term.
