The El Cajon Police Officers’ Association, the union representing law enforcement personnel in San Diego County’s sixth largest city, announced Wednesday its endorsement of state Sen. Brian Jones in the hotly contested 50th congressional district.
“Once we make an endorsement, we support that candidate all the way,” said Travis Howard, president of the union. “We want the people of El Cajon to know Brian Jones is the choice of law enforcement.”
Jones faces three other Republicans, incumbent Rep. Duncan Hunter who is under indictment for alleged campaign finance fraud, former Rep. Darrell Issa, and former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio, as well as Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar.
Both Issa and DeMaio currently live outside the district, and Jones has positioned himself as the only Republican challenger with local roots.
Jones’ political career has included stints as a Santee city councilmember, state assemblyman, and now state senator.
The 50th district encompasses much of San Diego County, stretching north from Interstate 8 and east from Interstate 15, as well as a portion of Temecula in Riverside County.
