A group of local officials reopened Rolling Hills Neighborhood Park on Friday after it received multiple upgrades, including new playgrounds, additional seating and tables, and a butterfly garden.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, City Councilman Mark Kersey and San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony to reopen the park in Rancho Penasquitos.

Jennifer Palkovic, chair of  Sienna’s PlayGarden Community Project, helped spearhead the effort to improve the park, raising more than $250,000 for the $2 million project. Palkovic’s 16-month-old daughter, Sienna, enjoyed playing at the park before her death in 2012.

The park was first built in 1978 and it hadn’t received upgrades since 1986, when the city first installed playground equipment.

The full improvements include two new playgrounds, rubber surfaces, new tables and areas to sit, a tricycle track surrounding the playgrounds and a butterfly garden.
