State Assemblymember Todd Gloria introduced a resolution Monday that would signal California’s support for the “Green New Deal” under consideration in Congress.

His Assembly Joint Resolution 7 was presented for the first time before the Natural Resources Committee and was approved by a 6-2 vote.

“The Green New Deal sets a vision for what we must do for our future. Climate change is a global emergency and an existential threat to all of us. We have to treat it that way,” said Gloria, a Democrat who represents San Diego.

“This resolution will signal California’s support for those climate, environmental and economic policies that can provide benefit to all communities and it encourages our leaders in Washington to adopt them,” he added.

The Green New Deal is a proposed national  economic stimulus package that aims to address both climate change and economic inequality. The measure was jointly introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts.
