State Senate President pro tempore Toni Atkins has endorsed San Diego City Atty. Mara Elliott in her campaign for re-election in 2020.
Atkins, who represents California’s 39th district that encompasses most of the City of San Diego, said she is “proud to endorse Mara Elliott to keep protecting San Diego” as the city’s chief legal officer.
“Mara Elliot has been an unwavering champion for women’s rights, environmental protection and gun violence prevention,” said Atkins. “Mara and I worked together to crack down on illegal ivory trafficking and expand her landmark Gun Violence Restraining Order initiative statewide to keep firearms out of the hands of people who pose a threat.”
Along with Atkins, Elliott has recently been endorsed by Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Assemblymember Todd Gloria, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest, the Municipal Employees Association, and the La Raza Lawyers Association.
Attorney Cory Briggs has filed paperwork for a possible election challenge, but has not announced a decision on whether he will run.
