The largest union for San Diego County employees has endorsed Terra Lawson-Remer, who is challenging Kristin Gaspar for the 3rd District Board of Supervisors seat in 2020.

The endorsement comes from SEIU Local 221, which represents San Diego County employees, public workers in cities across San Diego and Imperial Counties, Head Start employees, school employees, and court reporters.

Lawson-Remer was also endorsed by Laborers Union Local 89, which represents construction workers in the San Diego region.

“I am proud to have earned the endorsements of these major unions representing county workers and working people in our region,” said Lawson-Remer. “It is the members of these unions who deliver the vital public services provided by our county government, and who build the housing and important transportation infrastructure in our region, and I am honored to have them at my side in the campaign.”

Lawson, an Encinitas resident, is a professor at UC San Diego, community organizer, economist, small businesswoman, and attorney. She served in the Obama Administration as a senior advisor to the Treasury Department and founded the Catalyst Project for social change.

Though the supervisor position is officially non-partisan, Lawson-Remer is a Democrat. Gaspar is a Republican who has frequently appeared with President Trump in Washington to support his immigration policies.

Also seeking the seat are Escondido City Councilmember Olga Diaz and Jeff Griffith, a board member of Palomar Health.

District 3 includes the cities of Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Escondido and northern areas of San Diego from San Pasqual south to Tierrasanta, and including Mira Mesa, University City and Scripps Ranch.
