Deputy City Attorney Marni von Wilpert announced her candidacy Tuesday for the San Diego City Council District 5 seat.

Von Wilpert burnished her announcement with endorsements from San Diego City Council members Barbara Bry and Jennifer Campbell, former San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald, Carlsbad City Councilwoman Cori Schumacher and La Mesa City Councilman and Circulate San Diego Executive Director Colin Parent.

“I’m running for city council to put people over politics,” von Wilpert said. “I believe San Diego is ready for a new generation of leaders who will move our city forward by rejecting the politics of anger and division, and putting our common interest ahead of the special interests.”

The district includes northern parts of the city like Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain and Scripps Ranch, where von Wilpert grew up. She attended Scripps Ranch High School and still lives in the neighborhood.

City Councilman Mark Kersey currently represents the district, but will be unable to run for re-election in 2020 due to term limits. Kersey has been rumored to be mulling a run for mayor, but has yet to announce his future plans.
