The parents of Chelsea King, a Poway High School senior who was tragically murdered in 2010, have endorsed interim San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan in the June 5 primary.

Brent and Kelly King said at a press conference they believe Stephan has the experience and compassion to deal with horrific cases like their daughter’s.

Chelsea King disappeared on Feb. 25, 2010, while jogging near Lake Hodges. Her body was found days later in a shallow grave, and DNA evidence led police to arrest John Gardener.

Gardener pleaded guilty to the murder of King and and 14-year-old Amber Dubios, who disappeared in February 2009. He is currently serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Chelsea King’s death was the inspiration behind Chelsea’s Law, which mandates lifetime prison terms for those convicted of violent sex crimes against children.

Stephan faces Geneviéve Jones-Wright, a public defender whose campaign has received support from a political action committee funded by billionaire George Soros.
