President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will grant a full pardon to another conservative ally, this time author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza who is a La Jolla resident.

D’Souza pleaded guilty to violating federal campaign finance laws in 2014 stemming from the New York Senate race in 2012. He was sentenced to five years of probation, including eight months living under supervision, and a $30,000 fine.

He is best known for the 2010 book “The Roots of Obama’s Rage” and subsequent film “2016: Obama’s America” that most critics described as a partisan attempt at “character assassination.”

In February he was widely criticized for a series of tweets which appeared to mock the political activities of survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida.

Trump has pardoned two other controversial conservative allies during his 16 months in office: former Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff Lewis “Scooter” Libby and former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio.
