Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom has called for a ban on gun shows and sales at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
In a letter mailed Monday, Newsom appealed to the directors of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, which operates the fairgrounds, to consider a ban at its next meeting.
“Permitting the sale of firearms and ammunition on state-owned property only perpetuates America’s gun culture at a time when 73 percent of Californians support gun reform measures,” he wrote.
Newsom, who is running for governor, said that as mayor of San Francisco he pushed for a ban on shows and sales in nearby Daly City, the site of the Cow Palace arena.
The Crossroads of the West Gun Show is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds four times a year, most recently in March, when it drew protests.
