Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins announced Friday she chose the associate director of Alliance San Diego to serve on a census-related committee created by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Christopher Wilson, 51, has held the associate director title at Alliance San Diego, which promotes social equality through initiatives related to human rights, inclusive democracy, educational equity and tax reform, since 2015. He’s also a member of the Urban League of San Diego County Board of Directors and the Engage San Diego Mobilization Fund.
Atkins said Wilson’s experience is well-suited toward serving on the 25-member California Complete Count Census Committee that will guide the state’s 2020 census outreach.
“Without a full and accurate census count, Californians could lose their voice in Congress and billions of dollars in federal funding for vital public services,” she said. “Alliance San Diego has earned the trust of vulnerable and hard-to-count communities in San Diego. I’m confident in Christopher Wilson to bring invaluable expertise and perspective to this committee.”
Census outreach will include state initiatives, school-based programs, nonprofit partnerships and a multilingual media campaign.
Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon each appointed one member to the committee; Brown appointed the rest. Committee members won’t be compensated for their work.
