Rep. Scott Peters has endorsed Democratic candidate Josh Butner in the race for the 50th District Congressional seat in East County.
Butner, a retired Navy SEAL commander and trustee of the Jamul-Dulzura Union School Board, is challenging the Hunter family’s long hold on the seat.
“Josh Butner’s 23 years of service in the SEAL Teams embodies the type of service-driven leadership that will always put our country first,” said Peters in the announcement Thursday. “Josh will fight for the needs of the communities of East County and North County San Diego.”
Rep. Duncan Hunter is fighting for his sixth term amid an FBI investigation into alleged campaign finance irregularities. His father represented the area in Congress for 28 years before him.
“I am deeply grateful to have the endorsement of Congressman Scott Peters,” said Butner. “I look forward to continuing to serve our country and especially the 50th Congressional District as best I am able.”
Butner also faces Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar, a former Obama administration official, and Republican Bill Wells, the mayor of El Cajon.
