The California State Assembly adopted Thursday a joint resolution co-authored by California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) strongly opposing the Trump Administration’s proposal to perform offshore oil and gas drilling and demanding U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke remove California’s offshore waters from the proposed leasing plan.
“California’s coastline is not for sale. Today, the Assembly took a firm stance against this disastrous proposal from the Trump Administration and we will continue to push back until it’s defeated,” said Assemblymember Gloria. “It is unfathomable that the federal government would choose to put California’s offshore marine ecosystem and water resources in jeopardy for oil and gas exploration. This is just another terrible proposal from the Trump Administration that never should have seen the light of day.”
AJR 29, introduced by California State Assemblymember Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara), expresses the Legislature’s unwavering support for the current federal prohibition on oil and gas drilling off California’s coast and opposes the removal of any safety and environmental protections related of offshore drilling. In addition, AJR 29 calls on the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to schedule more public hearings related to offshore oil and gas drilling. Currently, California’s only public hearing on this issue is scheduled for today in Sacramento.
